How to Protect Your Home During a Storm

Before a storm hits your area, be sure to prepare your home, family and pets in case a disaster strikes. Events such as storms, floods other natural disasters can cause serious damage to your home and being well prepared can lessen your chances of damage.

For stormy weather start by putting up shutters or plywood on windows and openings; remember that winds will be the strongest at higher elevations. If your home is in a floodplain or there is a flood warning then move all valuables and furniture to a higher elevation.

Also be sure to have a waterproof container available for valuable documents and take this if you have to evacuate. In the event of heavy rain and flooding, it’s also recommended to turn off electricity at the main circuit breaker, or fuse box in order to protect your appliances.

If you have pets, make sure that you include supplies for them in your emergency kit and if you evacuate, take them with you. Also for children, it’s important that they have a role during an emergency situation to avoid chaos. After the storm has passed be sure to inspect your home for damage, and if necessary contact a professional to ensure that the right procedures for insurance are being taken.
